Majority of the time when I go to purchase avocados at
the grocery store, they are nowhere close to being ripe enough to eat. But I’m
totally fine with that. Because I’ve got a little system on making sure I
always have a ripened avocado or 2 at home ready to enjoy. And I eat almost a ½
of one a day.
So here is my system…
1. Get 3-4 unripened (apparently not a word, but
best describes it) avocados from the store.
2. Put 1-2 unripened ones in the fridge.
3.
Put 1-2 in
a paper bag on your counter to ripen. It takes a few days for them to
ripen. You know they are ripened when
they are softer when squeezed and the part they were hooked on at the tree is
easy to push in. (Don’t know the fancy name for that spot.)
4. Now once those are ripened, you can set them out
to be used. Use within a day or two. Or if it might be a few more days, then
put them in the fridge. Or have one out and put the other in the fridge. Whatever
works before for you. :)
5. Then, take 1 or 2 unripened avocados out of the
fridge and put them in the empty brown paper bag to ripen while you enjoy the
ones you just ripened! By the time you finished your already ripened ones, the
avocados in the paper bag should be ready to eat.
6.
Next time you are the store, buy 1-2 more
unripened avocados to put in the fridge until their turn to sit in the paper
bag.
Now how to store an avocado you only use part of…
1. Cut the ripened avocado in half. Twist to open
it.
2. Slice up the amount you want to use. Use the
side without the pit first.
3. Scoop out what you want.
4. Put the 2 halves back together and wrap it up in
plastic wrap. Or if you just have half left over, just wrap up that one half.
Keep the pit in.
5. Refrigerate it until ready to use again. It will
last about 5 days. Yes, the outer parts will get brown, but it is still green
under that. So it is still fine to eat.
Hopefully this helps anyone who is frustrated with only
finding unripened avocados at the store.
Do you guys have any specific way you ripen and store
your avocados?
